Miel sings for new Maggie’s Centre

23rd October 2013

The singer and philanthropist Miel de Botton will perform at an exclusive gala dinner on 30 January 2014, in aid of a major new Maggie’s Centre for cancer care at St Bartholemew’s Hospital, London. The event is sponsored by HSBC.

In the magnificent Great Hall at the historic hospital otherwise known as Barts, de Botton will perform music from her upcoming debut album, in support of the leading UK cancer charity that places thoughtful building design and community support at the centre of its activities.

Designed by acclaimed New York practice Steven Holl Architects, the new centre will be a striking cylindrical structure featuring bamboo interiors and a multi-coloured glass façade. It is inspired by the medieval history of the site, including the musical notation of Gregorian chant, and will enable Maggie’s’ to help thousands of new people affected by cancer.

“It’s a charity that I love,” says Miel de Botton. “When I walked into Maggie’s’ London in Charing Cross [designed by Richard Rogers], I was immediately struck by the beautiful serenity of the place. I could totally understand how buildings can have a calming influence on anyone and particularly someone suffering from an illness.”

Miel de Botton is inspired by “the melodies and romance” of French songwriters Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour and Jacques Brel and poets such as Rimbaud and Baudelaire. Her album will feature music from her icons in addition to her own compositions and is produced by Andy Wright (Simply Red, Eurythmics, Jeff Beck, Natalie Imbruglia).
